Political Journey

Konda Surekha started her official political life in the mid-1990s. She did not get a big position on day one. She started from the grassroot level of democracy.

  • 1995: She was elected as a Mandal Parishad member. This was her first real step into local government administration.

  • 1996: Seeing her dedication, the Congress party made her a Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) member.

  • 1999: She fought her first big election for the state legislative assembly. She won the election from the Shyampet constituency and became a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time.

After entering the Assembly, she took on major responsibilities inside the party. She was appointed as the Treasurer for the Congress Legislature Party. She also joined key committees focused on women's rights, child welfare, public health, and primary education. In the year 2000, she became a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Rise to Power as a Minister

The year 2009 was a turning point in her political career. She contested the assembly elections from the Parkal constituency and won with a good margin. The Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh at that time was Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (popularly called YSR). YSR was a very popular leader, and he liked Surekha’s hard work and courage.

YSR gave her a place in his cabinet. She became the Minister for Women Development, Child Welfare, and Disabled Welfare. As a minister, she worked on schemes for women's safety, child health, and welfare programs for poor families. She gained high respect during this period as an active woman minister.

Loyal Ties and Political Shifts

In September 2009, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy died suddenly in a tragic helicopter crash. This event changed Andhra Pradesh politics completely. Many Congress leaders stayed with the party, but YSR's son, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, decided to create his own path. Konda Surekha showed strong loyalty to YSR's family.

To support Yagan Mohan Reddy, she resigned from her minister post in late 2009. Later, she also gave up her MLA seat. In 2011, she officially joined Jagan’s new party, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). She fought a by-election for Parkal on a YSRCP ticket, showing her willingness to leave political power for her personal loyalty.

However, political situations changed again over time:

  • 2013–2014: Differences came up between her and the YSRCP leadership. She left the party and joined the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS, then called TRS), led by K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR).

  • 2014 Elections: She contested from the Warangal East constituency on a BRS ticket and won the seat comfortably.
  • 2018: Due to internal group politics in BRS, she felt sidelined. She and her husband left BRS and came back home to the Congress party.

Victory in 2023 and Cabinet Comeback

When the Telangana Assembly elections were held in late 2023, the Congress party made a major comeback. Konda Surekha contested again from the Warangal East constituency. She worked very hard on the ground, met thousands of voters, and won the election.

On December 7, 2023, the new Congress government took charge under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Konda Surekha took oath as a Cabinet Minister. She was given two important portfolios:

  1. Department of Environment and Forests

  1. Department of Endowments (managing Hindu temples and religious institutions)

She served in this cabinet role for over two and a half years. She regularly visited forest areas, worked on nature conservation projects, and managed famous temples across Telangana state.

Courageous Nature and Controversies

Konda Surekha is widely known for her bold speech and aggressive nature. She never hides her feelings or holds back her opinions. If she feels something is wrong, she speaks out loudly, even if it creates problems for her within her own party.

Because of her direct way of talking, she has landed in controversies multiple times during her career. Her political enemies often call her aggressive, but her supporters call her a brave fighter who never backs down under pressure. She has always presented herself as a champion for the Backward Classes (BC) and common working-class people in Telangana.

People from Warangal feel she is one of their own family members. Along with her husband Konda Murali, she helps local youths, organizes community aid programs, and helps poor families during medical emergencies.

Her home in Warangal is always open to public visitors. Common people visit her every morning with small petitions about water, electricity, roads, and land issues. She tries her best to solve their local problems quickly by speaking directly to government officers.

Conclusion

Konda Surekha is one of the most dynamic women political leaders in Telangana history. Her journey shows how a woman can start from local village politics and rise to become a cabinet minister twice under different chief ministers. Even when she faces downfalls, removals, or internal party conflicts, she finds a way to stand up and fight back. Her political story is defined by courage, hard work, loyalty, and a strong connection to her home district of Warangal. Though her removal from the cabinet on September 3, 2026, marks a fresh obstacle in her path, her strong follower base means her political journey is far from over.
